Inge Morath on the Set of 'The Misfits'

In 1960, Inge Morath was commissioned by Magnum to spend two weeks on the set of Miller’s film The Misfits. Morath had never worked with Monroe before and took a series of empathetic photographs, showing an understanding of the difficult personal trauma that Monroe was going through. In this photograph, Monroe is looking out of the window, away from her husband. The distance between them – as experienced and recorded by Morath throughout the filming – resulted in their divorce in late 1961.

Miller described Morath’s photographs as ‘particularly emphatic and touching as she caught Marilyn’s anguish beneath her celebrity, the pain as well as the joy in her life’
